HONOR KULA
ARTIST STATEMENT
My movement lives somewhere between the natural and abstract world, inhabiting different points on the spectrum. Damp, heavy, painful movement morphs into movement that feels chaotic, detached, and dangerous, blurring the lines between tangibility and disembodiment. I find myself thinking inquisitively about how this external world influences the internal world of the body and vice versa. What barriers exist in movement and what happens when they are challenged? How does movement constrict and dilate? How does it boil, melt, and vaporize? What happens when the foundations of movement become denatured? These questions are ongoing – explored but never solidified. My movement strives to extend closer to answers, while simultaneously uncovering new questions. As I feel the effort of the chambers within my chest echo throughout my body, I seek to explore how the oxygenation of my cells exhibits humanistic qualities of negotiation, surrender, and integrity.

Honor Kula is a New England-based dancer originally from Concord, New Hampshire, and recently graduated with a B.S. in Dance Performance & Choreography at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. Kula has performed new works and engaged in residencies at Skidmore College with guest artists Adam Barruch, Moscelyne ParkeHarrison, Robert Battle, BalletX, and Larry Kiegwin. Kula has also performed in several works by Skidmore College faculty including Erika Pujič, Jason Ohlberg, Chia-Ying Kao, André Robles, and Christin Williams. She has attended both the NEWAVE 2026 dance intensive as well as the Bates Dance Festival 2025. Kula has trained primarily in contemporary, modern, and tap dance, but enjoys implementing additional movement styles into her repertoire. Studying both dance and pre-medicine at Skidmore College, Kula is interested in exploring physiology via movement. She finds herself at an everpresent intersection between art and STEM, approaching movement through a creative, expressive, and analytical lens. She plans on pursuing a career in concert and freelance dance. Outside of the studio, Honor enjoys cooking without following a recipe and discovering places she’s never been.
